Before we get to all the news, especially the dismal stuff,  please watch this — hope you laugh as much as I did (while I was also wincing) —

The GOOD News:

  • NEW YORK — Michelle Obama & Stellar Co-Hosts Celebrate ‘Let Girls Learn’ at Broadway Bash for spouses of government leaders, currently in NYC for the United Nations' annual general assembly – The First Lady says, "More than 62 million girls around the world are counting on us to be their voice," she said. "And I intend to keep speaking out on their behalf not just for the rest of my time as first lady, but for the rest of my life. I hope that you all will join me."— www.people.com/...
  •  October 11 is the International Day of the Girl Child. CNN will be airing a documentary about Let Girls Learn on that day.

  • WASHINGTON DC Girls Rights Take Stage At #GirlsGovern Town Hall– the issues are still deadly serious, but these young women are so inspiring – womensenews.org/...

  • WASHINGTON DC Report on the We Won’t Wait Summit  over 1,000 community leaders and organizers gathered to take the initiative in making what’s important to women actually part of the national agenda, especially race, class and labor issues — msmagazine.com/...

  • MUMBAI Justices VK Tahilramani and Mridula Bhatkar of the Bombay High Court hold the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act should extend to the "mental health" of a woman and she should be "allowed to opt out of an unwanted pregnancy irrespective of the reason," endorsing the right of a woman to "lead a life of her choice."— timesofindia.indiatimes.com/…

  • IRAQI Survivor of ISIL kidnapping and rape honored by UN — Nadia Murad becomes a Goodwill Ambassador — www.globalissues.org/...

The NOT Good News:

  • Patriarchy Trumps Women’s Equality expecting women to change seats for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men is sexist — fusion.net/…

  • What Hillary Clinton and Britney Spears have in common:“There is no way you can actually do ‘being a woman’ correctly in the public eye”– Author Sady Doyle’s new book, ‘Trainwreck: The Women We Love to Hate, Mock and Fear. . .and Why’ explores why a man’s desire for attention is acceptable, while a woman who seeks public attention has her sex life, mental health, personal relationships and physical appearance picked apart — www.salon.com/…

  • Case in point: American blogger and feminist writer Jessica Valenti, founder of the Feministing blog in 2004. Her latest book is Sex Object: A Memoir (2016). Valenti recently got this response from an obviously AngryMan (WARNING: really ugly language) —

“I wish you tried this feminism bullshit in the Middle East so they can stone your ass! Women have it made so well here compared to a lot of other parts of the world. Does your ignorant ass not know that or do you just have too much time on your hands because nobody loves you Imao. I bet nobody loves you except for other pathetic feminazis. Would you be saying that shit if men were allowed to hit women? That’s the reason western women talk a lot of shit. You know we are not allowed to physically stop you from talking shit so you abuse that loop hole. Because you’re a pathetic cunt”

Valenti’s comment: the ‘loophole’ bit is my fave”

  • Guns DO Kill Women — New data shows firearms 100 times more likely to kill you than protect you — nytlive.nytimes.com/...

  • Columnist Steph Herold discusses the "emotional and cultural effect" of the Hyde Amendment,"a sneaky rider" that restricts Medicaid as well as other government insurance programs from covering abortion care — rewire.news/…  and www.womenshealthpolicyreport.org/…

Please Sign:

  • Stop the Bad Medicine laws! Sign the National Partnership for Women and Families petition:

”Politicians need to exit the exam room and stop playing doctor with women’s health. My health care is my business, and it must be left to the people I trust: my doctors, my family and me. Anything else is Bad Medicine”

go.nationalpartnership.org/...

  • President Obama just proposed a federal rule that would prevent states from playing politics with Planned Parenthood and any other women's health care provider ever again. The rule says that providers like Planned Parenthood cannot be defunded for any reason other than a clear inability to deliver services. Tell the Department of Health and Human Services:

"I stand with Planned Parenthood and other family planning care providers. Approve the proposed federal rule to prevent states from playing politics with Title X family planning funds."
