“Women are problem solvers, and often
we don't get much credit for that because
the typical image of a leader is someone
who's loud, obnoxious, chest-pounding.
That's not my vision of what true
leadership is; true leaders are the ones
who work with great commitment to
get something done.”
–Mazie Hirono, first woman elected
to the U.S. Senate from Hawaii

WOW2 is a four-times-a-month sister blog to This Week in the War on Women. This edition covers stories from November 1 through November 8.

“A theory in the flesh means one
where the physical realities of our
lives – our skin color, the land or
concrete we grew up on, our
sexual longings – all fuse to
create a politic born out of necessity.
Here, we attempt to bridge the
contradictions in our experience:
We are the colored in
a white feminist movement.
We are the feminists among
the people of our culture.
We are often the lesbians
among the straight.
We do this bridging by
naming our selves and
by telling our stories in
our own words.”
―Michelle Cliff,
Jamaican-American author
of Claiming An Identity
They Taught Me To Despise

“I can’t afford the luxury of despair
or pessimism. We still have to hope.
We’re a timeless people, we’ve lived
in a timeless land. We have suffered
the invasion of two hundred years,
and we’ll go on suffering. But we
are going to survive…”

Australian Aboriginal poet, artist,
educator, activist, and politician

The purpose of WOW2 is to learn about and honor women of achievement, including many who’ve been ignored or marginalized in most of the history books, and to mark moments in women’s history. It also serves as a reference archive of women’s history.
These trailblazers have a lot to teach us about persistence in the face of overwhelming odds. I hope you will find reclaiming our past as much of an inspiration as I do.

THIS WEEK IN THE WAR ON WOMEN
